In February 2017, after five months of chasing a diagnosis, we learnt that Ben had a rare and aggressive bone cancer called Ewing's sarcoma, which had spread throughout his body. He went through intensive chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery to his femur, and two brain surgeries over the next year. In May 2018, Ben's treatment options ran out.

My darling husband Ben died on Saturday 19th May with me, his mum and his dad by his side. He was 40 years old. If positivity and strength were what it took to beat cancer, Ben would still be with us. Despite facing the most unfair of fights, Ben carried us all through the past 16 months with his characteristic whole-heartedness and uncomplaining nature. I see his determination, resilience and humour in our Ottilie, and I will carry his love and strength in my heart always. Nothing but death could have parted us.

Ewing's sarcoma and other bone cancers usually affect teenagers, and because they are relatively rare, funding for research into their cause and new treatments is scarce.

Much of the treatment Ben received was developed nearly 50 years ago, with only minor adjustments since. For sufferers of primary bone cancers, public fundraising is essential to support the development of new drugs.
