The Charlie Watson Memorial Fund
Raising vital funds for life saving research.
Charlie's Story
Charlie lived with osteosarcoma for two and a half years.
Diagnosis came at the end of 2020, approximately 3 months after we had first sought medical advice for a pain in his right arm. He was 17 years old. Devastatingly, at diagnosis it had metastasised to his lungs and the outlook was poor.
He suffered a relapse, following successful MAP chemotherapy and limb-saving surgery, in the Spring of 2022. More treatment followed and he achieved some stability.
Sadly it was not to last for long as in the Spring of 2023 he experienced a further relapse. This time amputation of his right arm was the only option. He bravely faced surgery despite being given a 25% chance of not making it out of theatre.
By the time Charlie had recovered from surgery and was to begin another line of chemotherapy things had progressed.
He only had one more cycle before we were given the devastating news in June 2023 that there was nothing more that could be done. Further treatment options were not going to help.
He passed away peacefully, surrounded by love , just 4 weeks later in July 2023. He was 19 years old.
Charlie’s zest for life was evident for all to see. He packed in as many adventures as he could in his far too short a life. Festivals, boy’s holidays, parties and even taking on the challenge of learning to drive.
His real passion though, was for football - it was intrinsically a part of who he was. A player, a fan, a referee, assistant manager of the under 18s, youth committee member… the list is endless!
A true Gooner through and through. AND a proud Norsemen … never has a blue giant walked taller than Charlie Watson 💙
He loved spending time doing the things he liked with the people he loved - family and friends were the most important things to Charlie.
Quite simply, Charlie loved life. To have been denied a long and healthy one is something which we will never get over.
"We pledge to spend our lives honouring him in every way we can. Charlie we love you beyond measure"…
Supporting The Charlie Watson Memorial Fund
This fund has been created as a permanent tribute to Charlie. A hilarious, kind and caring boy, he brought joy to everyone he knew. His passing has left a huge hole in our lives - one which can never be filled.
Charlie was keen to help others affected by bone cancer so we hope that monies raised in his name will enable vital research and the development of new treatments, provide new patients and their families with crucial support and information but perhaps most importantly, contribute towards finding a cure for this devastating disease.
It was his hope that one day , young people like himself would not have to endure the same brutal treatment regimes which he did. That they would have a chance at life. A life without bone cancer.
