Jess' Story

When I was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a form of primary bone cancer, my world changed overnight.

One moment I was living a normal life as a new mum, and the next I was facing major surgeries, intensive treatment and, ultimately, the loss of my arm.

It was terrifying, and everything felt so uncertain, not just for me, but for the people who love me.

Within a week of being diagnosed, I was undergoing life-saving limb salvage surgery. Before starting chemotherapy, I had to make urgent fertility decisions. Because I wasn’t eligible for NHS funded IVF, I had a procedure to preserve my fertility and just one week later, chemotherapy began. Chemotherapy brought infections, hospital stays and a level of exhaustion I will never forget. Then, in May 2023, I heard the words I feared most; my cancer had returned. More tumours were found during surgery prep, and I was told that amputating my left arm would offer me the best chance of survival.

My amputation took place on 26th May 2023.

Since then, my journey hasn’t simply been about recovery, but ongoing monitoring and continued challenges. I have regular three-monthly scans to closely monitor my health, living with the uncertainty that comes with it.

Since my amputation, I have faced further recurrences of cancer, including in my shoulder and twice in my right lung. Each time has meant more surgery, more hospital stays, and more to process, both physically and emotionally.

Through it all, I have been at home with my boys; my partner Karl, our son Theo, and our dog Spencer, who have all been amazing. They are the reason I keep pushing forward, even on the hardest days.

Throughout my journey, I learned just how rare and underfunded bone cancer really is. The Bone Cancer Research Trust gave me comfort, information and hope during some of the most difficult moments of my life.

Knowing there are people dedicated to improving treatment, supporting patients and working towards better outcomes made a huge difference.

"I want to turn everything I’ve been through into something positive, raising awareness and vital funds so research can continue, and so future patients have better options, better treatments and ultimately better chances."

That’s why I’ve chosen to set up this Special Fund. I want to turn everything I’ve been through into something positive, raising awareness and vital funds so research can continue, and so future patients have better options, better treatments and ultimately better chances.

This fund is a way for my family, friends and community to come together and support a cause that means so much to me. Every donation, every fundraiser and every conversation about bone cancer brings us one step closer to a future where no one has to face this disease alone.
